Rohan is our endodontist. An endodontist is a dentist who specialises
in the treatment of the tooth root. This is usually called root canal
treatment. He qualified from the Royal London Hospital and completed
his post-graduate studies at the Eastman Dental Hospital.
Inside
each root is a nerve (or 'pulp') which can become inflamed. To avoid
the formation of an abscess (which would eventually cause pain), the
endodontist carefully removes all the nerve tissue and fills the
'canals' inside the root. Rohan uses a high magnification microscope to
show him the inside of the root while he is working. Your dentist will
either refer you to Rohan for an initial consultation, or for treatment
to be started. If a consultation is advisable Rohan will discuss with
you the treatment that would be involved and advise you on the likely
outcome. A treatment appointment is likely to last for 1½ - 2 hours. It
is very unlikely that you will feel any discomfort - a combination of
gentleness and effective local anaesthesia usually ensures a
comfortable experience. Low dose digital x-rays will be used.
