Dental implants: Why we recommend them
Implants are made of titanium, and fit into the bone to take the place of the missing tooth root. Once an implant is firmly in place we use it in much the same way as the original root, and fit a crown onto it.
In previous years, teeth used to be replaced by conventional fixed bridges or dentures, which was all that was available.
Fitting a bridge usually involved crowning the teeth either side of the gap, which was particularly unfortunate if the teeth were otherwise healthy and intact. Implant retained crowns are free-standing, so do not involve the adjacent teeth in any way. They are therefore preferable to bridges because:
- the neighbouring teeth remain intact
- cleaning is much easier as they are not connected to the neighbouring teeth
- they do not depend on the strength and viability of the neighbouring teeth
