| Endodontics
is the clinical name for root canal treatment.
Inside each root is a 'root canal' and
inside that is a nerve (or 'pulp') which
can become inflamed. This can happen as
a result of decay or trauma - and sometimes
for no clear reason. To avoid the formation
of an abscess (which would eventually cause
pain), the endodontist carefully removes
all the nerve tissue from the inside of
the root canals using specially designed
tiny instruments.
Low dose digital x-rays are used during
treatment - these are visible instantly
on screen.
Our endodontist is Dr Rohan Rajasingham.
He uses a high magnification microscope
to show him the inside of the roots while
he is working - without this it is difficult
to achieve the ideal result. Once the root
canal is perfectly clean it is filled and
sealed so that no bacteria from the mouth
can penetrate it.
