dental implants FAQsDental implants are becoming increasingly popular among patients attending our central London specialist dental practice. During an initial consultation with one of our prosthodontists, patients usually have many questions; here are five of the most frequently asked:

1. Will other people be able to tell that I’ve got dental implants?

Implants are the closest replacement to natural teeth. It is very difficult to spot the difference. Furthermore, dental implants can help improve your appearance, not only through a confident, natural smile but by preserving the facial features and avoiding the sunken cheek effect that often comes with tooth loss.

2. Will I be able to feel the difference?

Implants work in just the same way as teeth. Their principal advantage over dentures is that, anchored to the underlying bone, they feel secure so provide much improved functionality – you won’t spend time worrying about whether the adhesives will hold if you eat something too crunchy or too tough. The material (titanium) sits comfortably with your gums so you will soon forget that they are not your natural teeth.

3. How long do dental implants last?

Look after your implants well, as you would your natural teeth, and they should last for decades. It is just as important to look after your gums around your implants, and to have regular check ups with your dentist and hygienist.

4. Am I a suitable candidate for dental implants?

If you have lost a tooth, then the likely answer is yes, you are a suitable candidate. There are very few people who are not good candidates for implants – indeed, they suit people at any age. General medical health can be an obstacle, perhaps more relevant to elderly patients.

5. Will it hurt?

There may some associated discomfort but this will be short lived. At our central London specialist dental practice, making dental treatment painless is one of our priorities.
